The eleventh annual Summerhill 4x4 Family and Fun day was held on Friday 4 June 2010 and Saturday 5 June 2010 outside Hazyview, and was once again a huge success! The parents of Summerhill Prep School are the proud hosts of this day, and thank Natie and Charmaine van Staden and Tom and Ray Vorster for the use of the beautiful venue, situated on the banks of the Sabie river, under the canopy of huge indigenous trees.
The main sponsor this year was Hazyview Supa Quick and Bridgestone, who really made this day look professional – our thanks to Wikus Kotze and his team!
The event was officially opened on Friday night with a glass of complimentary sparkling wine sponsored by Dirt Rd Liquor, and a complimentary snack buffet sponsored by Chris Harvie of Rissington Inn and Cindy Thomas of Clivia Stream Cottages. A concert was held by the kids of Summerhill Prep School, launching the “Brick in the Wall” project. This project aims to raise R250 000.00 for the school in order to expand the buildings required by this fast growing school. A brick can be purchased in the “wall”, and a plaque will be displayed on the finished wall once the building has been erected. Summerhill Prep School is a self-funded, multiracial preparatory school, and will appreciate any donations made by the community towards realising their dream school. Any person or company who would like to support the “Brick in the Wall” fund may contact the school or the event organiser, contact details below.
On Friday night the first 4x4 Night Event was launched, and had competitors scrambling through the bushes to find the clues, this adventure race was designed by Martin Smith. Competitors had to negotiate bush trails with their 4x4 vehicles in the dark, so torches and lights were a necessity. This event proved to be enjoyed by all the competitors, and will definately form part of the 4x4 menu next year!
The Friday evening was rounded off by a very interesting presentation by Dr Ian Whyte, on the dilemma of elephant control in the Kruger Park. Ice cold beer and refreshments were served in the Windhoek Lager Beertent.
Saturday morning greeted the event with full sunshine and clear skies. After enjoying a wholesome breakfast sponsored by Casa do Sol, the competitors proudly showcased their deadly machines. 36 Teams entered the challenge this year, and offered excellent spectating on all eight obstacles, built by Bruce McQueen, LAS Plant Hire, Lennie Pillay and Martin Smith. The ladies obstacle had the crowds roaring with delight when the girls kicked up some mud!
Besides the 4x4 competition, a host of exhibitors thrilled the almost 2000 spectators to this event. Exhibitors included Rudamans, 4x4 Mega World, Numbi Auto, Westvaal Nelspruit, Tata, Hi-Tech and Stewarts & Lloyds, who sponsored the hilarious Car Wash Babes, some of the babes proved to be a bit masculine on closer inspection!
For the family there was a whole lot of entertainment around the flea market, which offered hours of shopping pleasure. The children were entertained by the giant slide, Miball Bizz, jumping castles, arts and crafts, face painting, temporary tattoos and hair wigs. The highlight of the children’s activities was the cake icing competition, were six teams of children were each handed a slab of sponge cake, icing and tons of sweets, to create their own 4x4 masterpiece of a cake. Each team won a grand hamper sponsored by Pick‘n Pay. We thank Umbhaba Lodge for sponsoring the delicious building blocks for the cake icing competition! The Boeresport was great fun for children of all age groups, offering lots of prizes to be won.
Ice cold draught beer was served in the double sized Windhoek Beertent, our thanks to Brandhouse for the great sponsorship with beertent, furniture and equipment! Various foodstalls offered delicious bites to eat including pregos, grilled chicken, giant kebabs, boerewors rolls, burgers, Chipstix, calamari, fish and chips, biltong, sweets, candyfloss and pancakes. The Teagarden offered freshly brewed coffee with delicious freshly baked cakes to enjoy while browsing through the art exhibition and second hand bookstand on display in the tea garden.
A Unimog tug of war between the 4x4 “teams” of the Blue Bulls and the Sharks had the dust flying, with the Blue Bulls eventually putting an end to the efforts of the Shark team.
The Hazyview Supa Quick Mud Bath Showstopper once again was the highlight of the day to the spectators, offering mud, guts and glory! Photos of the event can be ordered from Snappy Snaps, visit their website to view all the pictures taken during the day – www.snappysnaps.co.za, stunning pics!

A special thanks to Ferdie Lourens Electricians for their generous help with sorting out the electricity supply, as well as Spesplan Security for their complimentary services throughout the weekend. The funds raised from this event will be applied in upgrading the facilities on the Summerhill School premises.
